College exploration
We all get asked the same question when we are younger “ what do you want to be when you grow up?” And we’d answer with astronaut, nurse, doctor, famous singer or celebrity. Well I never really thought long and hard about what I wanted to do when I grow up. I would see things and be like oh that’s cool or oh that’s dope I wish I could do something like that. Well now that time has come to think long and hard about it.....
I’m aware I’m a junior in high school, therefore I get asked questions like “what do you want to do for college?” Or “what do you see yourself doing for the rest of your life?” to answer those questions honestly and truthfully I have no godly idea of what I want to do for the rest of my life. Like I’m not sure what I ate for breakfast this morning. Which is why I chose to do college exploration for one of my inquiries. So I can finally tell people “yeah, I’m working on figuring out what I want to do.” Instead of being like “yeah man your guess is as good as mine.” |
Inquiry proposal:
College exploration was a close second for me, personally. As I have no idea what I want to do in college let alone for the rest of my life. So I took this as an opportunity to dive in and find out what I am interested in or at least have an idea of what I’m not interested in. As it will help get me closer to figuring out what I want to do, rather than being completely lost. I also chose this inquiry because I’m a junior and need to get the ball rolling on colleges. Therefore I hope to get more information about the different things that might interest me beyond high school because as much as I’d like to, I can’t just keep playing sports.
My goals for this inquiry are pretty straightforward. I don’t have to necessarily figure out what I want to do for the rest of my life. But more like just to get an idea of what I want to do in college by exploring different interests that I have. Or if I don’t have that then at least I know what I don’t want to do, which is already a step in the right direction. As it’s one step closer to what I actually want to do. I feel that it’s important to figure out my likes and dislikes for college because that will not only benefit me later down the road but it also gives me an idea of what I might be interested in.
I feel as though College exploration requires the portrait of a learner competencies such as solution seeker and skillful collaborator the most. I will make sure that throughout this journey I’ll continue to use the skillful collaborator and solution seeker. As I can ask others about how they decided on what to do in college, take in that information and their thoughts, opinions or even perspective. To apply it to what I want to do or might want to do for college and beyond, even if they are different from what I think. Solution seeker is one that is pretty straightforward as it’ll make sure that I stay on track even without referring to it. As this whole inquiry is about solving the “problem” of what I want to do beyond high school because sports can’t save me forever.
For the research portion of this inquiry I’ll be focused on asking graduated seniors, college students, family members, research online or I could even reach out to some professionals who actually help juniors and seniors figure out what they want to do for college for a living. I’d most likely email them asking questions about some steps I could take to getting closer to figuring out what I want to do for the future.
My goal for deadlines is to keep it up to date weekly. As this is a pretty important inquiry so a lot of time and thought will be put into this. As I also really do need to figure out at least part of my life. So I’ll keep up with the weekly check-ins making sure I’m up to date, I’ll also go by the weekly goals as well to get a rough idea of where I should be.
As for the marketing and communication part of this, might be a little more challenging as everyone has different interests but I’m more than willing to share how I got an idea of what I want to do beyond college and even high school. I could also use my social media to get the word across to others.

Getting started
To get started I looked up some colleges in Long Island, NY because for some reason I’ve always wanted to go to school in New York. Well it was either New York or Michigan. But Michigan is a little to far away. As I want to be far enough away to find myself and what I want to do not to mention explore the world a bit. With that being said I don’t want to be too far away from home so I can visit often. This in mind I think the furthest I’d go would probably be New York. I actually like New England believe it or not. Also I don’t think I’d be able to survive at a school without cold weather and dunkin.

I also think I have an idea of what I want to go to college for but again I’m not 100% sure. I’ve always pictured myself owning my own business whether it’s clothing or shoes. Lately I’ve been really interested in the idea of designing shoes and different style of clothing. I believe that going it design and or marketing information systems would be best fit for what I want to do. So while I was looking at schools I focused on what programs they have to offer along with their athletics. I researched three so far LIU Post, Syracuse and Northeastern. I goal it to have a list of at least 10 than figure it out from there.

Biggest mistakes I've made throughout the college process
1. Telling adults what colleges I'm looking at
I'm one who doesn't like to disappoint others but when it comes to my future I don't need other adults telling why I shouldn't go to a college of my choice. Or when they tell me what colleges I should be going to instead of the ones I choose because it makes someone like me second guess or not even want to talk about colleges with other adults. They say in the end it's your decision and they don't want to make you feel pressured in their own opinion on your choices, but they do. They put an added amount of unnecessary stress on your shoulders. A word of advice, listen to what they have to say. Make them feel good about their opinion on your school then tell them exactly what you want even if you aren't sure, make your voice heard over theirs. They had their chance a determining their future now it's ours!

2. Being pressured into making decisions
Making decisions that will forever effect my life, is a stressful thought. Let alone everyone putting in their two cents on my interests or what I want, making me second guess my decisions. Which shouldn't happen but it does because no matter what happens you'll always feel pressured by your peers to make the "right decision". From my experience you can't make the "right decision" if you don't experience mistakes and mess ups. The more you try new things the closer you are to figuring out what is truly the right decision for you and your future.
